... sort of.
I thought I'd upload some progress photos of some cosplay items I'm working on. It's always fun to look back on things I've created and see how they took shape.
Edward Elric's Automail ArmWith the exception of a few elementary school craft projects, I've never really had the opportunity to create something by utilizing craft foam. Since my access to hobby stores that sell styrene sheets is rather limited, and since I don't have the required tools for metalworking, I thought I'd craft Ed's right automail arm out of craft foam.
I chose black to match the satin glove that is to be worn underneath, and to match the black gloss base I'll be using when I begin painting it.
Even though the results of my projects are far from being perfect, I am sort of a perfectionist. I always have to fix every little detail that I find unsatisfactory, or else it will bother me. Because of that, I tend to take a lot of time when working on something. Mix that with the fact that I'm pressed for time before the next convention and have little money to spare, and I'm left with no time or funds to create a protoype to experiment with. So, I kind of have to be careful as I go along.

After creating the hand and forearm pieces, I decided to test out some resin I purchased for coating. If I were smart, I would have tested it out on a piece of scrap foam. But, since I lack that kind of common sense, I dove in and started coating the arm grill and some of the finger pieces with resin. Luckily for me, the resin didn't eat through the foam - YAY!
I was initially unsure (and a little irritated) by the 72-hour cure time, but I found it to be a positive thing. Because of the amount of time to fully cure, I was able to rework the shape of the coated piece as it hardened. I also wet-sanded it while it was still a little tacky, so instead of just scraping off the resin, it was sort of reworked into uneven surface areas.

You can see the marks I made with a silver sharpie and parts I sanded, but these will be covered in a second glossy coat of resin and the painted with metallic paint.
I won't be able to continue working until the rivets and setter I ordered come in the mail. That'll give me time to figure out a way to earn $100 for the airbrush compressor and paint that I need. LOL.
SPINNING BALL O' DOOM
LOOK, I'M AIRBENDING!!! Or... RASENGANN!!!
Since I plan to re-use my Naruto costume from last year, I thought I'd at least prepare a prop of some sort. The kunai I used last year was pretty lame. I really wanted to create a Rasenshuriken, and I even devised a plan to make it, but it's not something that time and my bank account will allow, LOL.
The biggest thing that bothers me about this prop is that half the lights are green, and it's quite apparent when you view it in person. I don't want to try and replace the bulbs with blue ones since I fear I might break it altogether. But it's mainly to be used for photo and video purposes, and the green lights don't appear in that media.

I'm still unsure if which of three ways I should hold it: The way in the first two pictures, the middle two pictures, or the last two pictures. Although, I'm leaning toward holding it in the manner of the first (because I like that it has the perfectly round shape to it) or last photos (because in this manner, you can actually feel a breeze up close). The middle two look like half of an airball and it's the most difficult to hold that way, I think XD

I should go to bed now, haha!
